Indian Maritime University (IMU) was established on 14th November 2008 as a teaching and affiliating university under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as headquarters. It was set up to promote maritime studies, training, research and extension with focus on emerging areas like
oceanography, maritime history, maritime laws, maritime security, search and
rescue, transportation of dangerous cargo, environmental studies and other
related fields, and to achieve excellence in these areas.

There were 6 renowned legacy teaching-cum-research institutes under the Ministry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian Maritime University in November 2008.

The 3 institutes in Mumbai, namely, the Training Ship Chanakya T S CHANAKYA, the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research (LBS COLLEGE), and the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) became the Mumbai campus of the Indian Maritime University

The 2 institutes in Kolkata, namely, the Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI, KOLKATA) and the Indian Institute of Port Management (IIPM) became the Kolkata campus of the University. The National Ship Design and Research Centre (NSDRC) in Visakhapatnam and the National Maritime Academy in Chennai became the Visakhapatnam and Chennai campuses respectively of the University. November 2008, 3 new Campuses were set up – in Kochi in 2009, Kandla in 2011 and Karaikal in 2014. Candidates can get the IMU CET 2017 application form through online process from the above given link. Application for UG and PG courses has been started from 25th Mach 2017. The last date of application form will be 8th May 2017. Candidates can apply for IMU CET 2017 after ensuring their eligibility for the programme they wish to apply.

Application Fee:

Candidates have to pay Rs. 1000/- and Rs. 700/- (SC/ST candidates) as an application fee. The fee will be submitted through online payment gateway.

IMUCET Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for IMU-PGDME:

Candidates must have obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering /Mechanical & Automation Engineering/Naval Architecture.
ITI aspirants with a graduation degree in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering from IMU are also eligible to apply.
The maximum age limit is 28 years on 1st January 2017.
Five year relaxation in age limit is given to reserved categories.

Eligibility for IMU CET:

Only unmarried candidates are eligible.
Candidates desirous admission in the university courses are advised to apply for Passport before taking admission.
Candidate minimum age is 17 years & maximum age is 25 years on or before 1st August 2017.
5 years age relaxation for reserved candidates.
Those candidates seek admission in marine courses are required to produce the medical fitness certificate by Doctors approved by Director General of Shipping.
Only those appearing candidates are eligible who appear for qualifying examination on or before 31st May 2017.
Age Criteria For IMU CET DNS Course:

Male Candidate (Gen/OBC-NCL) – DOB must fall between
02-02-1992 and 02-02-2000.
Female Candidate (Gen/OBC-NCL) – DOB must fall between

Physical Fitness:

Candidates seeking admission in DNS course must be physically fit and should meet the medical requirements as specified by DGS guidelines. Candidates with Disability (DA) are not eligible for admission to marine courses. At the time of admission, candidates have to produce the certificate of medical fitness issued by concerned authorities.

IMU CET 2017 Exam Pattern
There will be Common Online CET for all UG Programmes [except BBA (Logistics, Retailing and E-Commerce) programme], Online CET for Lateral Entry of DNS-passed students to 2nd Year of B.Sc (Nautical Science), Common Online CET for the MBA (Port and Shipping Management), MBA (International Transportation and Logistics) and the M.Sc (Commercial Shipping and Logistics) programmes and Common Online CET for M.Tech (Marine Technology and Management), M.Tech (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) and M.Tech (Dredging and Harbour Engineering) programmes. The IMU CET will be held through online process on 27th May 2017. The duration of the entrance exam is three hours. There will be Multiple Choice Question will be asked. There will be no procedure of negative marking.

IMU CET Syllabus
The CET syllabus of UG Course will be based on the level of Class 12th (CBSE, ISE and State Boards). The syllabus of UG Course will come from the subjects Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, English, General Knowledge and Aptitude. The MBA course syllabus comprises of Quantitative ability, Verbal ability, Data interpretation and Logical reasoning. M.Tech Course syllabus consists of General Knowledge, English, Mathematics, Aptitude and General Engineering.

IMU CET Admit Card 2017
The IMU CET 2017 Admit Card will be provided through online mode. Candidates can download their admit card from the official website. The admit card for will be available from 12th May 2017. The university informs the registered candidates through SMS or email.

IMU CET Result 2017
The IMU CET 2017 Result will be declared for UG and PG courses on 30th May 2017. On the basis of the CET Score, candidates will be selected for the counselling procedure.

IMU CET 2017 Counselling
Shortlisted candidate register themselves for online counselling procedure. The online counselling registration will be started from the 2nd June to 16th June 2017. Through IMU CET 2017 counselling process, the seat will be allotted to the candidates. The counselling procedure will consist of document verification, physical fitness clearance, etc. The document will be verified from 10th to 16th July 2017.

What is Marine Engineering in Merchant Navy?

B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering. B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering is a highly job oriented course. This Engineering branch has been designed to train candidates become Marine Engineers on Merchant Navy ships. At the end of the course, successful candidates are awarded the Class 4 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, India. Please note that this certificate is provided only after a candidate completes 6 months of sea service. Once this Certificate of Competency is obtained, candidates may don the role of a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World. When it comes to B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering Degree, there are two ways in which a student may acquire it. He/she may go for the regular B.E./B.Tech. Degree or may go for Lateral Entry (after completing Diploma program). The course duration is of 4 years. On the other hand, students making use of the lateral entry could get admission in 2nd year, directly. So, for them, the course duration is of 3 years.

 

Marine Engineering COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in DNS Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

· Educational Qualification: – 1.Regular B.E./B.TECH. Marine ENGINEERING Program- 12th Pass (from a Recognized Board) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with min 60% marks. Minimum marks in English subject- 50%.

  1. Lateral Entry Program- Completion of Diploma course in Mechanical or Marine Engineering is required with min 60% marks from a recognized Institute.

After the completion of the course and 6 months of sea service, one will be able to get the Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. After getting this certificate, you may join Merchant Navy ships as a Marine Engineer. After going through more training programs and going through further sea service period, you may rise through the ranks and obtain Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This way, one may even go on and become the Chief Engineering Officer too. Shipping Industry is a good sector where one may build a rewarding career. What is BNS in Merchant Navy?

B.Sc. Nautical Science a field related to Maritime studies and offers exciting, adventure filled as well as financially well rewarding career. It is a 3 years long full time residential program (Bachelor of Science course) and has been divided into 6 semesters, each lasting 6 months. B.Sc. in Nautical Science covers all important topics related to maritime studies. Along with theoretical studies and practical aspects. In the end, after the completion of the course, cadets may go on and become Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. But before one may take on the post of Navigating Officer in Merchant Navy ships, one has to go through the mandatory 12 months long sea service.

DNS COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in DNS Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

This certificate will enable one to hold the post of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships.

Even after landing such a post, one could climb up the career ladder. After 18 months of sea service as a Navigation Officer, and clearing the written and oral examinations, one could obtain the first mate’s Foreign-going certificate of competency.

After 12 months of Sea Service as the Chief Mate and upon clearing the written as well as oral examinations, one could obtain the Master’s Foreign-going certificate of competency.

What is DME in Merchant Navy?

DME stands for Diploma in Marine Engineering. NCV stands for Near Coastal Voyage. It is a training course related to the field of merchant navy. It is a job oriented training course that will help you get into the merchant navy sector. The total course duration is 30 months. Out of these 30 months, the initial 6 months are reserved for academic training. This is followed by 24 months of sea training. Together, the entire training course lasts for 30 months.

NCV COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

To be considered eligible to pursue this course, candidates must satisfy some requirements. They are –

Age limit: Must be between 17.5 to 25 years (in cases of most of the institutes offering this course).

Educational qualifications: Being 10+2 passed (any stream, with English subject) from a recognized board is the minimum qualification required. Candidates possessing advanced qualifications are also eligible to apply!

Physical and medical standards: Candidate should be physically and medically (eyesight and hearing) fit, as per the Merchant Shipping guidelines.

ADMISSION AND CAREER PROSPECTS:-

Many maritime institutes in India are offering NCV course at the moment. After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. This has to be followed by sea training. One must complete 24 months of sea training. After sea training phase, candidates may appear for 2nd mate NCV exam, clear it and get the certification!

After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. After course completion and formalities like document submission, successful candidates will be given CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

Candidates who possess CDC are eligible to join merchant navy ships. Saloon rating holders usually work in the kitchen of the ship, taking care of catering and hospitality affairs.

They may start off with ranks as low as mess boy, assistant steward or steward. Gradually, they may rise through the ranks like second cook, cook, and chief cook!

What is GP Rating in Merchant Navy?

GP Rating course stands for General Purpose Rating course.  It is a pre-sea training course for 6 months duration that even 10th passed students may pursue after schooling! This course will help one in building a career in Merchant Navy. Students who want to have an exciting and adventurous career may go for this course. GP Rating course focuses on training cadets in two main roles of shipping sector- Deck crew and engine crew. Deck and Engine Rating programs are available as Individual courses. But GP Rating combines them both and trains candidate Deck as well as Engine Rating aspects. In this course, cadets will be given knowledge and skills related to topics like- ship machinery, swimming, fire prevention and safety technology, first AID, basics of sea, ship familiarization faring etc.

 

GP RATING COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

After completing the GP Rating course, one may work as Deck or Engine crew aboard ships. After 36 months of sea service, one may appear for 2nd Mate Examination and rise to Officer. With further sea service and examinations (oral and/or written), one may rise through the Ranks.

Salary specifications differ, depending on whether it is a Merchant Navy ship or Entertainment cruise etc. Generally, it is between 20-30k Rupees at start.

GP Rating course is a job oriented course that 10th or 12th passed students may pursue. Further, after taking up the job, one may still appear for exams and rise up through the Ranks!

Some of the Basic but important Eligibility Criteria for joining Merchant Navy are:-

  • For joining Merchant Navy on Officer Grade is after finishing 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Math). But don’t worry if you are from other stream (Arts or Commerce) or having a minimum qualification of 10th, then also you can apply for joining Merchant Navy by doing Pre-Sea Training Courses.
  • Your Marital Status must be single at the time of joining Merchant Navy (Either Male or Female).
  • You must have your eyesight 6/6, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • For applying Officer Grade job in Merchant Navy you may have to face an Entrance Test (IMU CET) or an Interview, but basically after 10th or for basic job profile in Merchant Navy you can have direct admission in Pre-Sea Training Courses.
  • For applying in Marine Courses after 10th or 12th your age should be between (17&half to 25) but for higher level Officer Grade after completing diploma or b.tech it may increase by (28to 35) depending upon qualification and courses.
  • You have to face a Medical Test for applying every Marine Courses, so you must be physically as well as mentally fit.
  • And the most important point candidate must apply in a DG Shipping (Directorate General of Shipping) approved institutions for doing marine courses or training, and you must aware of fake institutions or their application forms which are non-dg shipping approved. Verify all the details about college/Institution/Academy before taking admission.
