What is DME in Merchant Navy?

DME stands for Diploma in Marine Engineering. Diploma holders, belonging to specific Engineering Branches, may make use of this Diploma course to become Marine Engineers and work on Merchant Navy ships. It is a 2 years long pre-sea training course. This Diploma course focuses on Technical aspects of Marine Engineering.

After successfully completing this Diploma course and clearing MEO Class-4 Part A Examination, students will have to go through 6 months of compulsory sea service. After this stint and clearing safety courses, other training modules and tests, clearing MEO Class-4 Part B Examination, a cadet will be provided with Marine Engineering Officer Class 4 Certificate of Competency. After obtaining this certificate, one may start working as a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World. 12 months of sea service later, one may again appear for training modules and appear for MEO Class 2- Part B Examination. These exams will help one attain advanced competency certificates, like- Marine Engineering Class 2 Certificate of Competency and Marine Engineer Class 1 Certificate of Competency. Later, you may rise through the ranks and eventually become Chief Engineering Officer.

 

DME COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

  • Students possessing Diploma in branches like- Mechanical/Electrical/Naval Architecture/Marine/EEE etc are eligible to pursue this course, with around50-60% marks in final year of Diploma program.
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/12, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be not more than 28.

 

SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARY DETAILS:-

You can take up the role of Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships after obtaining the Class 4 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer). Once there, you may rise through the ranks and land better positions, by appearing for training modules and courses and clearing examinations associated with them.

Starting salary depends on different factors such as- profile of Employer, quality of the Institute from which the course has been pursued, grades attained by cadet etc. Generally, it is between 40-60k Rupees each month.

After retiring, you may take up the role of an Instructor at Maritime Institutes. Becoming an Independent Consultant is another option that is available.

What is NCV Course in Merchant Navy?

NCV stands for Near Coastal Voyage. It is a training course related to the field of merchant navy. It is a job oriented training course that will help you get into the merchant navy sector. The total course duration is 30 months. Out of these 30 months, the initial 6 months are reserved for academic training. This is followed by 24 months of sea training. Together, the entire training course lasts for 30 months.

NCV COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

To be considered eligible to pursue this course, candidates must satisfy some requirements. They are –

Age limit: Must be between 17.5 to 25 years (in cases of most of the institutes offering this course).

Educational qualifications: Being 10+2 passed (any stream, with English subject) from a recognized board is the minimum qualification required. Candidates possessing advanced qualifications are also eligible to apply!

Physical and medical standards: Candidate should be physically and medically (eyesight and hearing) fit, as per the Merchant Shipping guidelines.

ADMISSION AND CAREER PROSPECTS:-

Many maritime institutes in India are offering NCV course at the moment. After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. This has to be followed by sea training. One must complete 24 months of sea training. After sea training phase, candidates may appear for 2nd mate NCV exam, clear it and get the certification!

What is Saloon Rating in Merchant Navy?

It is a job oriented course that will help you get into the merchant navy sector. It is a pre-sea training course for 6 months duration that even 10th passed students may pursue after schooling! This course will help one in building a career in Merchant Navy. Saloon rating program focuses on maritime catering activities. It is a certification course that will help you get familiar with maritime catering processes. It is Similar to GP Rating Course.

After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. After course completion and formalities like document submission, successful candidates will be given CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

Candidates who possess CDC are eligible to join merchant navy ships. Saloon rating holders usually work in the kitchen of the ship, taking care of catering and hospitality affairs.

They may start off with ranks as low as mess boy, assistant steward or steward. Gradually, they may rise through the ranks like second cook, cook, and chief cook!

What is GP Rating in Merchant Navy?

GP Rating course stands for General Purpose Rating course.  It is a pre-sea training course for 6 months duration that even 10th passed students may pursue after schooling! This course will help one in building a career in Merchant Navy. Students who want to have an exciting and adventurous career may go for this course. GP Rating course focuses on training cadets in two main roles of shipping sector- Deck crew and engine crew. Deck and Engine Rating programs are available as Individual courses. But GP Rating combines them both and trains candidate Deck as well as Engine Rating aspects. In this course, cadets will be given knowledge and skills related to topics like- ship machinery, swimming, fire prevention and safety technology, first AID, basics of sea, ship familiarization faring etc.

 

GP RATING COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in GP Rating Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

  • Educational Qualification :- 10th Pass (from a Recognized Board)| 12th Fail| 12th with other Stream (Arts or Commerce)
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/6, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be between (17&half to 25).

 

 

SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARY DETAILS:-

After completing the GP Rating course, one may work as Deck or Engine crew aboard ships. After 36 months of sea service, one may appear for 2nd Mate Examination and rise to Officer. With further sea service and examinations (oral and/or written), one may rise through the Ranks.

Salary specifications differ, depending on whether it is a Merchant Navy ship or Entertainment cruise etc. Generally, it is between 20-30k Rupees at start.

GP Rating course is a job oriented course that 10th or 12th passed students may pursue. Further, after taking up the job, one may still appear for exams and rise up through the Ranks!
