What is Marine Engineering in Merchant Navy?

B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering. B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering is a highly job oriented course. This Engineering branch has been designed to train candidates become Marine Engineers on Merchant Navy ships. At the end of the course, successful candidates are awarded the Class 4 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, India. Please note that this certificate is provided only after a candidate completes 6 months of sea service. Once this Certificate of Competency is obtained, candidates may don the role of a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World. When it comes to B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering Degree, there are two ways in which a student may acquire it. He/she may go for the regular B.E./B.Tech. Degree or may go for Lateral Entry (after completing Diploma program). The course duration is of 4 years. On the other hand, students making use of the lateral entry could get admission in 2nd year, directly. So, for them, the course duration is of 3 years.

 

Marine Engineering COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in DNS Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

· Educational Qualification: – 1.Regular B.E./B.TECH. Marine ENGINEERING Program- 12th Pass (from a Recognized Board) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with min 60% marks. Minimum marks in English subject- 50%.

  1. Lateral Entry Program- Completion of Diploma course in Mechanical or Marine Engineering is required with min 60% marks from a recognized Institute.
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/12, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be between (17&half to 25).

 

SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARY DETAILS:-

After the completion of the course and 6 months of sea service, one will be able to get the Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. After getting this certificate, you may join Merchant Navy ships as a Marine Engineer. After going through more training programs and going through further sea service period, you may rise through the ranks and obtain Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This way, one may even go on and become the Chief Engineering Officer too. Shipping Industry is a good sector where one may build a rewarding career. It is an important sector, which is crucial for the growth and stability of the Global Economy. It generates a number of job opportunities. Marine Engineers are required by the Industry in large numbers. Starting Salary of Marine Engineer is approx.50-60k Rupees per month. With each promotion, this figure will increase. Salary also depends on the profile of the employer.

What is BNS in Merchant Navy?

B.Sc. Nautical Science a field related to Maritime studies and offers exciting, adventure filled as well as financially well rewarding career. It is a 3 years long full time residential program (Bachelor of Science course) and has been divided into 6 semesters, each lasting 6 months. B.Sc. in Nautical Science covers all important topics related to maritime studies. Along with theoretical studies and practical aspects. In the end, after the completion of the course, cadets may go on and become Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. But before one may take on the post of Navigating Officer in Merchant Navy ships, one has to go through the mandatory 12 months long sea service.

DNS COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

After completion of the course, the candidate should undergo the 1 year long sea service. After the sea service and clearing the subsequent oral examination, the candidate could obtain the second mate’s Foreign-going Certificate of Competency. This certificate will enable one to hold the post of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships.

Even after landing such a post, one could climb up the career ladder. After 18 months of sea service as a Navigation Officer, and clearing the written and oral examinations, one could obtain the first mate’s Foreign-going certificate of competency.

After 12 months of Sea Service as the Chief Mate and upon clearing the written as well as oral examinations, one could obtain the Master’s Foreign-going certificate of competency.

What is DNS in Merchant Navy?

DNS stands for Diploma in Nautical Science; it is a job oriented course that will help one build a career in Merchant Navy. It is a 1 year long Diploma course. The 1 year long course is usually divided into 2 semesters, with each semester lasting a period of 6 months. The course trains candidates to take on the role of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. It also covers basics of Marine Technical Knowledge, Safety and Fire Prevention, Communication Skills etc.

After completing Diploma in Nautical Science course, one may become a training cadet. After gaining 18 months of sea service period, one may appear for 2nd Mate Exam. After clearing it, one will be able to become 2nd Officer. After gaining further sea service period and appearing for further advanced tests, one may rise through Ranks and become Chief Officer. With time, it is very much possible to become a Captain too. Starting salary is generally between 30-40k Rupees per month. With each promotion, this figure will increase. Salary also depends on the profile of the employer. The pay package is decent and with promotions, things will only get better.

DME Course (Diploma in Marine Engineering)

What is DME in Merchant Navy?

DME stands for Diploma in Marine Engineering. Diploma holders, belonging to specific Engineering Branches, may make use of this Diploma course to become Marine Engineers and work on Merchant Navy ships. It is a 2 years long pre-sea training course. This Diploma course focuses on Technical aspects of Marine Engineering.

  • Students possessing Diploma in branches like- Mechanical/Electrical/Naval Architecture/Marine/EEE etc are eligible to pursue this course, with around50-60% marks in final year of Diploma program.
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/12, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be not more than 28.

 

SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARY DETAILS:-

You can take up the role of Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships after obtaining the Class 4 Certificate of Competency (Marine Engineer). Once there, you may rise through the ranks and land better positions, by appearing for training modules and courses and clearing examinations associated with them.

Starting salary depends on different factors such as- profile of Employer, quality of the Institute from which the course has been pursued, grades attained by cadet etc. Generally, it is between 40-60k Rupees each month.

After retiring, you may take up the role of an Instructor at Maritime Institutes. Becoming an Independent Consultant is another option that is available.

What is NCV Course in Merchant Navy?

NCV stands for Near Coastal Voyage. It is a training course related to the field of merchant navy. It is a job oriented training course that will help you get into the merchant navy sector. The total course duration is 30 months. Out of these 30 months, the initial 6 months are reserved for academic training. This is followed by 24 months of sea training. Together, the entire training course lasts for 30 months.

NCV COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

To be considered eligible to pursue this course, candidates must satisfy some requirements. They are –

Age limit: Must be between 17.5 to 25 years (in cases of most of the institutes offering this course).

Educational qualifications: Being 10+2 passed (any stream, with English subject) from a recognized board is the minimum qualification required. Candidates possessing advanced qualifications are also eligible to apply!

Physical and medical standards: Candidate should be physically and medically (eyesight and hearing) fit, as per the Merchant Shipping guidelines.

ADMISSION AND CAREER PROSPECTS:-

Many maritime institutes in India are offering NCV course at the moment. After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. This has to be followed by sea training. One must complete 24 months of sea training. After sea training phase, candidates may appear for 2nd mate NCV exam, clear it and get the certification!

Many maritime institutes in India are offering saloon rating course at the moment. Deserving candidates are selected after written test and/or interview. After securing admission, candidates undergo 6 months long academic program. After course completion and formalities like document submission, successful candidates will be given CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate).

Candidates who possess CDC are eligible to join merchant navy ships. Saloon rating holders usually work in the kitchen of the ship, taking care of catering and hospitality affairs.

They may start off with ranks as low as mess boy, assistant steward or steward. Gradually, they may rise through the ranks like second cook, cook, and chief cook!

GP Rating (General Purpose Rating) Course Details

What is GP Rating in Merchant Navy?

GP Rating course stands for General Purpose Rating course.  It is a pre-sea training course for 6 months duration that even 10th passed students may pursue after schooling! This course will help one in building a career in Merchant Navy. Students who want to have an exciting and adventurous career may go for this course. GP Rating course focuses on training cadets in two main roles of shipping sector- Deck crew and engine crew. Deck and Engine Rating programs are available as Individual courses. But GP Rating combines them both and trains candidate Deck as well as Engine Rating aspects. In this course, cadets will be given knowledge and skills related to topics like- ship machinery, swimming, fire prevention and safety technology, first AID, basics of sea, ship familiarization faring etc.

 

GP RATING COURSE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:-

There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in GP Rating Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

  • Educational Qualification :- 10th Pass (from a Recognized Board)| 12th Fail| 12th with other Stream (Arts or Commerce)
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/6, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be between (17&half to 25).

 

 

SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARY DETAILS:-

After completing the GP Rating course, one may work as Deck or Engine crew aboard ships. After 36 months of sea service, one may appear for 2nd Mate Examination and rise to Officer. With further sea service and examinations (oral and/or written), one may rise through the Ranks.

Salary specifications differ, depending on whether it is a Merchant Navy ship or Entertainment cruise etc. Generally, it is between 20-30k Rupees at start.

GP Rating course is a job oriented course that 10th or 12th passed students may pursue. Further, after taking up the job, one may still appear for exams and rise up through the Ranks!
