What is Marine Engineering in Merchant Navy?

B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering. B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering is a highly job oriented course. This Engineering branch has been designed to train candidates become Marine Engineers on Merchant Navy ships. At the end of the course, successful candidates are awarded the Class 4 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This certificate is awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, India. Please note that this certificate is provided only after a candidate completes 6 months of sea service. Once this Certificate of Competency is obtained, candidates may don the role of a Marine Engineer on Merchant Navy ships in any part of the World. When it comes to B.E./B.Tech. Marine Engineering Degree, there are two ways in which a student may acquire it. He/she may go for the regular B.E./B.Tech. Degree or may go for Lateral Entry (after completing Diploma program). The course duration is of 4 years. On the other hand, students making use of the lateral entry could get admission in 2nd year, directly. So, for them, the course duration is of 3 years.



There are three main Eligibility Criteria for taking admission in DNS Course – Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate.

· Educational Qualification: – 1.Regular B.E./B.TECH. Marine ENGINEERING Program- 12th Pass (from a Recognized Board) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with min 60% marks. Minimum marks in English subject- 50%.

  1. Lateral Entry Program- Completion of Diploma course in Mechanical or Marine Engineering is required with min 60% marks from a recognized Institute.
  • Medical Test: – Candidate must be mentally and physically fit. You must have your eyesight 6/12, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • Age Limit: – Your age should be between (17&half to 25).



After the completion of the course and 6 months of sea service, one will be able to get the Class 4 Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency. After getting this certificate, you may join Merchant Navy ships as a Marine Engineer. After going through more training programs and going through further sea service period, you may rise through the ranks and obtain Class 1 Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency. This way, one may even go on and become the Chief Engineering Officer too. Shipping Industry is a good sector where one may build a rewarding career. It is an important sector, which is crucial for the growth and stability of the Global Economy. It generates a number of job opportunities. Marine Engineers are required by the Industry in large numbers. Starting Salary of Marine Engineer is approx.50-60k Rupees per month. With each promotion, this figure will increase. Salary also depends on the profile of the employer.

Some of the Basic but important Eligibility Criteria for joining Merchant Navy are:-

  • For joining Merchant Navy on Officer Grade is after finishing 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry & Math). But don’t worry if you are from other stream (Arts or Commerce) or having a minimum qualification of 10th, then also you can apply for joining Merchant Navy by doing Pre-Sea Training Courses.
  • Your Marital Status must be single at the time of joining Merchant Navy (Either Male or Female).
  • You must have your eyesight 6/6, but don’t worry if you are wearing glasses (spectacles) because glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed but you must not have color blindness.
  • For applying Officer Grade job in Merchant Navy you may have to face an Entrance Test (IMU CET) or an Interview, but basically after 10th or for basic job profile in Merchant Navy you can have direct admission in Pre-Sea Training Courses.
  • For applying in Marine Courses after 10th or 12th your age should be between (17&half to 25) but for higher level Officer Grade after completing diploma or b.tech it may increase by (28to 35) depending upon qualification and courses.
  • You have to face a Medical Test for applying every Marine Courses, so you must be physically as well as mentally fit.
  • And the most important point candidate must apply in a DG Shipping (Directorate General of Shipping) approved institutions for doing marine courses or training, and you must aware of fake institutions or their application forms which are non-dg shipping approved. Verify all the details about college/Institution/Academy before taking admission.
